File Your Income Tax Return If You Filed For An Extension In April (Tax Deadline Is October 16 2023)

If you missed the original tax filing deadline earlier this year in April, you may have filed for an extension to give yourself more time. The deadline for filing your taxes is quickly approaching on October 16th, as the 15th falls on Sunday, so you have an extra day to prepare your taxes..

Make sure you have all your necessary documents and information together and file your taxes on time to avoid any costly penalties or late fees. Keep in mind the tax extension deadline.

With every episode of Linda Tuttle Adventuring Accountant TV, I like to equip you with a free resource that goes with the episode for the week.

File Your Income Tax Return If You Filed For An Extension In April (Tax Deadline Is October 16 2023)

In this episode I share a quick reminder about the tax due date of October 16, 2023.  Whenever the tax deadline falls on a federal holiday or a weekend, you have until the following day to file your return.  So for 2023, if you filed an extension in April 2023, you have until October 16th, 2023.

There are several different penalties for filing taxes late.  There is a late filing penalty as well as a late payment penalty.  Keep in mind an extension is an extension of time to file, not an extension of time to pay.  It is always best to get your tax return filed as soon as you can, but if for some reason you can't pay your balance due, it is always better to file your tax return on time, even if you can't pay the full amount due.

Being an entrepreneur means you need to be aware of tax deadlines and penalties so you can avoid paying more of your hard-earned money to the government.  I put together a resource called the  Entrepreneur Calendar to help you.  It will walk you through all the dates you need to be aware of as an Entrepreneur so you can avoid ever being charged a penalty again!  You can grab the 2024 calendar in the resources below.
